We Are Men...With Wood
As previously mentioned, I’m participating in the big PlayOn street hockey tournament this weekend, presented by Hockey Night in Canada. It all happens on Saturday May 24 and Sunday May 25 in and around Churchill Square, downtown Edmonton, 8am onwards. The weather is supposed to be around perfect with highs of 19 and variable cloudiness. Awesome. I wouldn’t want to be out there melting in the Alberta heat.
All Wood, All The Time
In my previous post I mentioned that my teammates and I registered in the “Legends” division, that is, the over 35 division. We thought we were playing it well, seeing as how all of us are just at the 35 mark (I’m 36 but close enough). We thought we’d do well against all the old bastards. No dice. I just got word that we were the only team to register in the over 35 division, and therefore that division is toast. Done. Wiped from the pantheon of legends with no ceremony. That puts us in the “All Stars” division. That’s the 19+ division. The thought of playing street hockey against a team of randy, testosterone heavy, beer blasting 20 year-olds doesn’t exactly turn my crank, seeing as how our team hasn’t had a whole ton of practice. If we manage to win a game, the whole thing will be a swinging victory. I’m sure we’ll get our asses nuked. But hey, that’s not the point. We’re in it to have fun and spend time together. We haven’t played serious hockey together since junior high – 20+ years ago.
Our team name? When you have a guy like the P-Dog on your team, the naming of a team is an opportunity to make a statement. We are called “Men With Wood”, and we have the bright blue t shirts to prove it. I’m number 18. Don’t ask me why I chose that number. “That’s the age of the women you like, HA HA HA!” said the P-Dog.
Cheer Us On
Consider this post your invitation to come down and cheer on MWW. The tournament schedule gets posted tonight, so I’ll update this post when the info comes through. If you’re game, and if you’d like to see a bunch of hacker / slashers get their asses handed to them in a most spectacular way, come on down to Churchill Square on Saturday. Look for the blue shirts and look for number 18. Unfortunately I’ll be sporting a helmet – doc’s orders. Hope to see you there.

Cool. Maybe I’ll swing by the Square after I hit up the downtown market on Saturday morning. Perhaps I’ll see your team and give you a cheer or two.
Sounds like it should be a fun event. Just make sure to lean into it when you get checked. It’ll jam the shoulder a bit, but at least you’ll stay on your feet.

How’d this go, by the way? I forgot all about this when the morning in question rolled up on me.

Ha! We got trounced. Lost all three games – one by the 10 goal mercy rule. That wasn’t the point, though. It was a ton of fun. Can’t wait for next year.
