The Tigress Has Spoken

Lovely Neko. Can I count the ways?

Saw Neko Case last week at the Horowitz theatre. I still haven't fully recovered from the event. I saw Neko a few years ago in Seattle, and I have to say that last weeks show was far and away the better of the two. It was a better showcase of her amazing voice and presence. I think I may have peed in my pants at one point in the show.

At what point, you ask? That would be when she launched into a version of Dylan's Buckets of Rain. Now, Dylan is perhaps my all-time favorite artist. Neko and Tom Waits take turns at second place. Hearing and seeing Neko do Bob Dylan was like jumping into a no-strings-attached threesome. Fucking awesome.

She fired up her set with "Favorite", one of my fave Neko tunes. She touched on a lot of great material that was missing from her last performance, most notably "I Wish I was The Moon", which is arguably the definitive Neko Case song. Her rendition of "Look For Me (I'll Be Around)," with stripped down accompaniment (just bass and pedal steel), was absolutely stunning and showstopping. Speaking of her band, they were amazing throughout her set. The pedal steel player especially. Looking like he just came from the garage, the guy sure laid down some fine string work.

Neko Case is clearly an amazingly talented vocalist and songwriter. She's also a devastatingly attractive woman. Her long red mane almost has a life of its own, and her slender frame is none too shabby. Did I mention that she played the first set in 2-1/2" heels? Not bad, methinks.

Needless to say, I loved seeing her again. And I'd travel further to see her again. Hopefully that's not necessary. I hope she swings back 'round these parts sometime soon. I miss that red mane already.
