My Talk at The Library
Yesterday I delivered an informative seminar at the Edmonton Public Library (Stanley Milner Branch, downtown Edmonton). The seminar dealt with writers and artists establishing themselves on the web. The talk was well promoted and well attended. I’d like to thank Linda Goyette and Anna Marie Klassen from the EPL for inviting me down to do my thing. And I’d like to thank everyone who made their way down there on a blustery Grey Cup Sunday (Riders Take The Cup! What did I tell ya?). It was nice to see so many new faces in the crowd.
We talked about blogs and websites – why they’re important for writers and how to set them up. Then we touched on YouTube, Podcasting, and everyone’s favorite workplace time-suck, Facebook. Somewhat reluctantly, I recently joined Facebook. I researched it extensively beforehand. I resisted as long as I could. I came to the conclusion that I simply had to be on it, just ‘cuz all the cool kids are on it. After playing around on it for a bit, I think it’s a good tool (as opposed to a fun, time-consuming toy). There’s a ton of superfluous BS on there but the networking / connection capabilities of the thing are undeniable and very compelling. Still, my mouse hovers over the “delete profile” button. We’ll see how it plays out.
For those interested, you can view my slides from the presentation here:
Some of them may not make sense outside the context of my talk, but there they are for reference. Incidentally, that slideshow (as simple and modest as it is), was created entirely online with Google Docs. I recently penned a ‘lil writeup on Google Docs. You can read it here, if you’re interested.
Well, winter finally parked his snowy butt down in our fair burg. Minus twenty out there as I write this. Time for handwarmers, long underwear, and hot chocolate with the little colored marshmallows. Cheers, all. See you around town.
