Blood Ink reading Went Down Fine
The Blood Ink show went down pretty sweet the other night. The venue (Hulbert's) was hot (literally and figuratively), the poets were all kick-ass, and the audience was abundant and really into the whole thing. Really great show.
I hadn't done an extended reading in some time and as such I was actually a bit nervous. I was kind of shaky on my first two poems, but I settled down after that. It was really great to read some new stuff (Rockett Power) and a few old favorites (Dylan Tribute). I had an awesome time and have to thank Alex, Elliot, and the rest of the Blood Inkers for inviting me down to do my thing.
The rest of night was marked by some amazing performances and some downright bizzare ones. Aaron Evringham lit up the night early on with his "Willow Bog" poem. An amazing poem complete with "benign slugs" and "eight-sided hearts". Tom Trofimuk delivered an excerpt from his upocoming novel, Doubting Yourself to the Bone, and it was killer. Michelle Boudreau kicked out a weeping, evocative song about her missing guitar that had my Kerry all teary-eyed. Jadon Rempel was his usual stirring and well-voiced self. Philip Jagger turned in an understated and great performance. He really is great when he puts aside the tickle trunk and the satan dolls.
I won't even go into some of the stranger open-mic experiences. Let's just say that I felt like I was in a David Lynch film for a while. Really bizarre. But hey, that's the nature of the open mic.
I'm doing another reading next week. More details on Tuesday. Salut.
